Trip Introduction

The Helambu trek is being so close to Kathmandu, the Helambu region remains relatively un-spoilt. Besides the Hyolmo culture of high mountain people, the company of green rhododendron and bamboo forests, majestic waterfalls, and the snow-capped Himalayas make the trek one of most diverse treks near Kathmandu.

This trekking is relatively low altitude trek and is considered to be one of the best areas for having a short trek, as it is close to Kathmandu. During the trek in Helambu, is all about hiking mostly at the lowest altitude 3000m and the high point is Tharepati La pass (3600m).

Detail Itinerary

  • Day 1
    Arrive in Kathmandu

    Upon your arrival at the Kathmandu airport, you will be greeted by a representative from Thai Nepal Travels. After picking up your luggage and look for our representative with a Thai Nepal Travels display board at the arrival gate. After that, you will be transferred to Hotel. After check-in, you can take a rest, hang around in the city - it all depends on your interests and condition. In the evening we will organize a "Welcome Dinner" at an excellent traditional Nepalese Restaurant where you will enjoy Nepalese cultural programs as well as a fine meal.

  • Day 2
    Kathmandu to Chisopani (2140 m)

    Drive from Kathmandu to the Sundarijal northern edge of the Kathmandu valley for about 1 hour by private transport and start to hike up to Mulkharka, the sprawling Tamang settlement. The trail continues on a gentle climb through the forests ridges before it drops down to Chisopani (cold water) (2,300m). Situated on the ridge from where you can see countless snow peaks. The sunrise on the Himalaya, from Annapurna to Everest, is particularly outstanding at this point. We are overnight at Chisopani

  • Day 3
    Chisopani to Gophu Bhanjyang (2,140 m)

    The trail continues to drop down to a good, sometimes level and crosses meadows and fields to Pati Bhanjyang. This is a Brahman and Chhetri village on a saddle at the bottom of the ridge at 1,860 meters. From here the trail starts climbing up again on a series of steep switchbacks to Chipling (2,170m) where we can stop for lunch. At the upper end of this village, the trail makes another steep, 200 meter, climb on a stone staircase to the top of the Jhogin Danda ridge. From the ridge, the trail descends through forest to a large chorten (round Buddhist monument) overlooking the Tamang village of Gophu Bhanjyang, which is a delightful, classic hill village with a pleasant main street. We are overnight at Gophu Bhanjyang.

  • Day 4
    Gophu Bhanjyang to Tharepati (3,640 m)

    From Gophu Bhanjyang the first part of the trail climbs up a steep, eroded trail through rhododendron forest passing only a few shepherds’ huts to a pass at 2,580 meters. The treks proceed north up the Yurin Danda ridge and afford views of Langtang and Gosaikund Peaks. We will cross the pass at 3,510 meters before we descent to Magen Goth where we stop for lunch. Afterwards, we pick up the ascending/descending trail again, passing through forests, across flower-strewn meadows and crossing streams till we reach Tharepati (3,640m).   • Day 5
    Tharepati to Melamchigaon (2,530 m)

    From the northern end of the village, the trail turns east and drops steeply into a ravine. Here the vegetation changes to large firs, then oaks and rhododendrons, as we rapidly loose altitude. After crossing the Chhyadi Khola on a suspension bridge, the trail makes a short final ascent to the prosperous Sherpa village of Malamchigaon at 2,530m. We will arrive here early and the rest of today’s time can be spent strolling around the village. Melamchigaon is a large prosperous Sherpa village with extensive fields of barley, corn, and potatoes. The gompa (Tibetan Buddhist temple) here has a line of prayer flags at the front, brightly painted walls and statues of Guru Rimpoche and his consorts. It is local belief that Guru Rimpoche meditated in a cave above the village and wore robes made by Dakinis (female angels). We are overnight at Melamchigaon.

  • Day 6
    Melamchigaon to Tarke Gyang (2,590 m)

    From the Melamchigaon gompa, the trail descends through the jungle to a bamboo tea shop at 2360 meter and then drops steeply through fields to the Malemchi Khola River. After crossing the suspension bridge at 1890m the trail begins its long climb towards Tarke Gyang, which is the largest village in the Helambu region. The stone houses here are building close together with narrow alleyways separating them. The gompa of this village has a large brass prayer wheel. We are overnight at Tarke Gyang.

  • Day 7
    Tarke Gyan to Sermathang (2,610 m)

    The trail leaves the village and makes a sweep around the wide valley to the pretty Sherpa village of Ganyul at 2,520 meters. The people in this village practice Drukpa Kagyu Buddhism, the same as the national religion of Buthan. From here the trail drops over a ridge but soon starts climbing up again through deep forests, crossing a number of streams to a crest at 2,620 meters. We continue our way passing the large gompa at Chumnik before another gentle climb leads as to the village of Sermathang. In the afternoon we can visit the gompa here. We are overnight at Sermathang.

  • Day 8
    Sermathang to Kathmandu via Melamchi Pul Bazaar (2-3 hours walk and 2 hours drive)

    From Sermathang the trail follows the ridge all the way down to Malemchi Pul Bazaar, making a drop of 1730 meter. The trail passes chorten after chorten in the settlements of Nigale, Gyalsha and Raithani Gyang. From here we descend through char pine forest to yet another chorten at Kakani, which is the last Sherpa village on the trek, and we now enter the lowlands inhabited by Brahmans and Chhetris. From Kakani, the trail drops steeply to the attractive village of Dubhachaur in a saddle at 1610 meter. Continuing farther down the ridge our trail will eventually bring us to a large suspension bridge which crosses the Indrawati River and brings us into Malemchi Pul Bazaar. From here we will take private transportation back to Kathmandu. In the evening, there will be a farewell dinner hosted by Thai Nepal Travels to celebrate the successful completion of our trip.     Final departure

    Our 9 Days Helambu Trek comes to an end today. A representative from Thai Nepal Travels will take you to the airport approximately 2 hours before the scheduled flight. Important Note:

Your safety is of paramount concern while traveling with THAI NEPAL TRAVEL. Please note that your leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to safety concerns. Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary; however, since this adventure entails traveling in remote mountainous regions, we cannot guarantee that we will not deviate from it. Weather conditions, the health condition of a group member, unexpected natural disasters, etc., can all contribute to changes in the itinerary. The leader will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but please be prepared to be flexible if required.

For the person who cannot continue trek until the end of trekking in case of any reason, he/she please note that there will be no refund. In case of the flight delay/cancellation after finishing of the trek, you will be responsible for all your expenses. Please also note that you will not be entitled to any refund for the services (such as hotel, transport, flight, etc.) included in the package that you would not use later.

For all accommodations at Langtang trek are in local lodges on a twin, triple or four-bed sharing basis. If we prefer a single room, we may indicate our preference and get single rooms on request by paying a single supplement. However, there are several places that do not allow single accommodations in the Langtang.

 

Accommodations

We will be providing you at Hotel Marshyangdi or equivalent in Kathmandu and teahouses during the trek. All accommodations are on a twin-shared basis. Single supplement will be served on request and will cost an additional.

Meals

During the trek, you can enjoy authentic Nepalese food as well the more common international cuisine (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, Indian, etc.). Breakfast and dinner will be served from the tea-houses or from a lodge menu where we spend the night whereas lunch will be served on the way to the next destination. All meals will be provided during trekking while only breakfast will be available while in Kathmandu. There will also be welcome and farewell dinners for guests.
